Program Objective

The Green Meghalaya Movement is an umbrella initiative uniting ALL current & past schemes, MGNREGA and externally-aided projects (EAPs) to address natural resource management and sustainable livelihoods in Meghalaya. This allows for institutionalizing these projects as part of a long-term, systemic & community-led approach for the whole state.

The Green Meghalaya Movement has two key components:

  • Community participation and institution building;
  • Introduction of scalable practices and sustainable livelihoods.

Both components are in service of the overall vision of the Green Meghalaya Movement, which is as follows: “The people of Meghalaya envision and drive change to build a green future; Meghalaya pioneers an approach that can inspire other states to take action on climate change.”

Program Activity

The Green Meghalaya Movement involves a two-pronged approach – a “High-touch” and a “Low-touch” Model. The “High-Touch” Model entails extensive state-support and involvement in village-level planning and action on NRM and sustainable livelihoods. This includes several existing programs addressing natural resource management and sustainable livelihoods, including (but not limited to):

  • The Community-Led Landscape Management Project (CLLMP)
  • The Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Project (Megha-LAMP)
  • Project for Sustainable Community Forest Management in Meghalaya (JICA)

The Green Meghalaya Movement also involves the selection of an additional 400 villages for a “High-Touch” Model of facilitated NRM planning and action, through the Community & Rural Development Dept. In total, 2,600 villages are involved in the high-touch model.

In addition, all 6,000+ villages of Meghalaya are receiving the “Low-touch” model through the following initiative:

  • Village Community Facilitator training initiative conducted by Soil & Water Conservation Dept (SWCD)
  • Project for Sustainable Community Forest Management in Meghalaya (JICA)
