Program Objective

Provision of at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work, and will include:

  • social protection of employment opportunities for the most vulnerable people in rural India,
  • livelihood security through creation of durable assets,
  • improved water security, soil conservation and higher land productivity,
  • drought-proofing and flood management in rural India,
  • empowerment of the socially disadvantaged through the processes of a rights-based legislation,
  • strengthening decentralized, participatory planning through convergence of various anti-poverty and livelihoods initiatives,
  • deepening democracy at the grass-roots by strengthening Village Level Institutions, and
  • effecting greater transparency and accountability in governance.

Program Impact

  • Creation of Employment by guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment in a financial year
  • Creation of assets that have benefited agriculture, rural development and the environment
  • Empowerment of women as seen in the increased participation of women in the 100 days of guaranteed wage employment program
  • With Agriculture being seasonal in nature, MGNREGA has been implemented in the form of an act to give unskilled employment to the rural community and to ensure that there is reduced migration to urban areas
  • Livelihood security for the poor via the creation of durable assets and through the Bottom-20 initiative
  • Strengthening grass root processes of democracy infusing transparency and accountability in governance particularly by involvement of Village councils.
